My latest works are quite different from what friends and acquaintance may expect of me. However, they still are inspired by nature. When attracted to a thing, a place, a portion or a detail of something, I sketch it in a rather crude, rough form, simplifying it to it’s basics; a sense of form, darks & lights, contrasts. Hours, days, or even weeks later I re-interpret the drawing as a response to what I have before me. This, is usually done away from the subject, so as not to be further influence by it, since in reality it is the inspiration I seek and not the details or subject itself. When I’m satisfied with the interpretation I may put it away. At a later time, after I have rattled it around in my head, I take the drawing out. At this point I respond to the drawing by putting paint to canvas, making choices and changes as I go. I am, in fact, working from within, reacting with color, form, texture, patterns, movement, the things of my craft - and with what I have come to know about nature and my feelings toward it, and connection to it. I quite simply believe all things are connected, including people, and I’m striving to capture that sense of life, form, and connection in the work. However it reveals itself...
